Review: Belly Dance Teacher Training Course with Mia
When I heard of Mia’s teacher training course I immediately signed up at the earliest opportunity. Mia had been my primary belly dance teacher over a number of years, and I always found her method of teaching very useful when learning, so for me to be able to teach like her would be well worth doing the course. I liked the fact that there was a practical and written exam to be taken at the end of the course. For me, passing the exam and getting a certificate was not so much about proving to other people what I could do, but it was mainly to prove to myself that I was ready to teach.
The course was run over four Sundays, over a three month period. The lessons were a combination of practical and theoretical learning. We learnt about identifying posture types, learning how to correct student’s moves, we learnt which moves are appropriate to teach to each level – beginner, intermediate and advanced, we learnt about drum beats and instrument types.
We did a lot of anatomical study – learning which muscles are used to create specific belly dance movements, and very importantly, we learnt how to safely warm up and cool down these muscles. We taught each other moves as we would to beginners, and went through each move in thorough detail. We received notes for our files on everything we learnt, and also received notes on other relevant details for teachers, like insurance, information on teaching people with injuries, and music licences.
It was very convenient to do the intensive course, as I felt that I learnt quickly, and we covered a lot in one day. On completion of the course I received a certificate (which my mum wants to frame!).
My students in Hendon and Archway are very happy with my teaching, and they, appreciate the way that I teach the technique and breakdown of each move. My classes are getting more and more popular each week. If I had not taken this course, I may have still been contemplating on whether to teach or not, and I am so glad that I made the right decision!
